Jan 12: 1 – Not enough outstanding teaching

PLEASE NOTE YOU ARE NOW IN AN ARCHIVE EDITION OF INTOUCH

RSC Regional Manager, Judi Millage, follows up on the latest Ofsted Annual Report and provides some tips on how technology can support the drive towards becoming outstanding.

Judi Millage - RSC Regional Manager“There is too little outstanding teaching in learning and skills providers inspected this year.”

So says the latest Ofsted Annual Report, which also goes on to say that “No colleges, adult and community learning providers or prisons received an overall outstanding judgement for the quality of teaching.”

Now whilst it would be naïve in the extreme to believe that technology alone can raise the quality of teaching, there is a growing recognition of the contribution it can make.

Really effective practice in learning and teaching should engage, encourage, develop and motivate learners and there are many examples of how technology can be used to support these objectives.

If you’d like to find out more about the contribution technology can make, a good place to start would be the Teaching, Learning and Technology course developed by RSC East Midlands and freely available for viewing and download at our Moodle site.

It looks at what makes a good lesson and considers how e-learning techniques and technologies can contribute to this objective.

If you want to investigate further, the JISC e-Learning Programme has a wealth of information which will help improve your understanding of how technology can support learning and teaching, including identifying the benefits and advice on implementation.

In this edition of intouch, there are various ideas for how you can turn your teaching into “outstanding”, such as using screencasting, video, texting or QR codes.

We also look at some of the infrastructure that needs to be there to support the curriculum such as a solid wireless network, having a reliable back-up system and turning your data into useful information.

And, of course, if you feel inspired to give it a go, the RSC can provide you with a range of advice and practical support in using technology, either to get you started, or to help you extend and improve what you already do.

To find out what we can do for you, take a look at our website or get intouch on 01509 618110 or support@rsc-em.ac.uk.
